Atypisch was founded in 2000 in Utrecht. We design and develop software that you can own or subscribe to. Our work sits at the intersection of product strategy, platform engineering, and open-source contribution to EU programmes.

For over twenty-five years we have built websites, content platforms, SaaS products and APIs for ambitious teams. The shape of the work has changed but the principle has not: ship something the client can operate themselves, for years.

What we believe

The SaaS market trained organizations to lease software, move data between rentals, and accept that the next pricing change is two emails away. We do not agree. Every product we ship can be self-hosted. You keep the runtime. You keep the data.

Open source is a default, not a marketing line. EU-hosted is a default, not a feature. Long-term maintenance is a default, not a separate service.

Approach

A few things we do differently.

Own it or subscribe.

Every product we ship can be self-hosted on your infrastructure. We support you running it, or we run it for you in an EU region you pick.

Boring stack, on purpose.

We choose technology that will still be maintainable in 2030. PHP, MySQL, Vue. Vanilla JS where it fits. Nothing exotic, nothing that needs a new lead engineer every two years.

Long-term partnership.

We don't disappear after launch. Most of our client relationships run multi-year. We are happy to be on retainer or to hand over completely — your choice, not ours.

Open source by default.

Where the work allows, we ship code as open source. We contribute upstream to the libraries we depend on. EU procurement appreciates it; the rest of the world should too.

Utrecht, NL.

Utrecht, NL. The studio is small on purpose. We are a tight group of senior engineers, designers and product strategists who work directly with clients and no account layer in between.

When we need to scale a team for a specific project, we partner with a small set of trusted European studios who match our standards.

Team

The people behind the work.

We are small on purpose, and work together with a range of freelancers and agencies, specific for each task. You talk to the people who do the work, not to an account layer in between.
